4 Tips for Buying a Used Exercise Bike

Getting an exercise bike for your house is a great way to stay in shape without paying for a gym membership, sharing equipment with other people, and driving back and forth to the gym every day.  Luckily, you can get an exercise bike for a few hundred dollars.

But, if you’re looking to save even more money, consider buying a used exercise bike.  Under the right circumstances, used exercise bikes are just as effective as brand new ones.  But, that doesn’t mean you can buy any ‘old bike.  Before you buy a used exercise bike, remember these 4 things:

  1.   Reconditioned bikes are a great buy

It’s not uncommon for people to buy an exercise bike, decide they don’t want it for some reason and return it to the store.  In many cases, the bike has been used very little – if at all!  However, the store cannot turn around and sell it for the full price, so, instead, it reconditions the bike.

Reconditioned bikes have been inspected, returned to the original specifications, and re-packaged for sale.  Usually, you can get a reconditioned exercise bike for about 30% off the full price!

And, making things even better, most reconditioned exercise bikes come with the full manufacturer’s warranty!

2.  Used exercise bikes are a hot commodity in March and April

Every year, millions of people make it their New Year’s Resolution to exercise more.  Lots of them go out and buy an exercise bike in January.  But, a few months later, the bike is collecting dust, and the owner is looking to get rid of it.  By checking places like Craigslist and eBay, you can find some great deals once those New Year’s Resolutions are a thing of the past!

  3.  Talk to your local gym

When professional gyms upgrade their equipment, they will sell off their old stuff.  If you buy a used exercise bike from a gym, it will be sold as-is (meaning it won’t be reconditioned).  However, gyms usually spring for top-of-the-line equipment, so you stand a good chance of getting a great machine.  Just remember, it may have already been pedaled thousands of miles!

4.  Test it out first

No matter where you plan on buying a used exercise bike, you’ll need to test it before you take it home.  Make sure the seat is in good condition, and that there aren’t any rips or tears in the upholstery.

Look at the safety features, and make sure everything looks secure.  See if the electrical cords are frayed.  Make sure nothing’s rusted.  Take a look at the plastic and rubber parts, and make sure they’re not cracked.

Then, hop on the bike for a few minutes, and make sure it runs smoothly and properly.  After all, you don’t want any surprises when you get home!
